Chris Miller, President of Miller Management, is the host of this week’s episode. He is joined by his colleague, Kevin Donoho, current Lead Pastor at College Church of the Nazarene.
Last week’s episode started the conversion off by know the “why” behind the mission. If everyone knows the mission, knows the why, they will be able to make changes better. This week’s episode is a continuation of the last episode.
Leading Well
The first Church that Pastor Kevin got to lead, he stayed until the size was triple what it started with. The second church Pastor Kevin got to lead, started at double the size of what he left from. There was a learning curve, only somethings were the same leading a church that size. But the mission was very clear. He attributes that to how they were able to grew from 400 to 800.
Start By Listening
Pastor Donoho knows that by listen to the stories of the church’s past, he was able to help lead this particular church forward. For the time that God has allowed him to lead this church. Kevin spends time knowing people first, before he tries to move people. Leaders who don’t take their time and roll out their bag of tricks too soon, won’t have as good of results of making changes.
When you are ready to make some changes, first, acknowledge where they’ve been and tie where we are headed back to the mission. This way, it shows you recognize that it’s not about you, as the leader. It’s bigger than you. No matter what size of church you are in, it can still be mission minded. “We grow wherever the Lord leads us.”
Try to get to know each other before making any decisions. Where we are going is important, but how we get there matters.
Final Thoughts
Remember: Share the story and connect it back to the mission so that people can make those connections. It’s fuel for the church! Look: we are doing what God is calling us to do! First start with the past, where the church has come from, and then continue to tell the stories as they come about.
